This weekend I went to Austin for the Shiner GHASP.  It was a 100 mile bike ride from Austin to the Shiner Brewery in Shiner, TX.  A group of us did the rally last year, as well, and this year was a good example of why doing your long training by time is better than distance.  In 2009, the wind was from the south the entire ride, so we had a 100 miles of headwind. By the time I show up to work on Tuesday, I should already be over half my normal weekly training load (as opposed to normally hitting that number Thursday, or so), and I keep going strong until my Longhorn taper.
